Proceedings of the U.K. Academy for Information Systems (UKAIS 2009), 14th Annual Conference 1 A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF BUSINESS PROCESS MODELLING TECHNIQUES Laden Aldin and Sergio de Cesare Department of Information Systems and Computing Brunel University Uxbridge, U.K. Email: {laden.aldin|sergio.decesare}@brunel.ac.uk Abstract Business process modelling is an increasingly popular research area for both organisations and academia due to its usefulness in facilitating human understanding and communication. Several modelling techniques have been proposed and used to capture the characteristics of business processes. However, available techniques view business processes from different perspectives and have different features and capabilities. Furthermore, to date limited guidelines exist for selecting appropriate modelling techniques based on the characteristics of the problem and its requirements. This paper presents a comparative analysis of some popular business process modelling techniques. The comparative framework is based on five criteria: flexibility, ease of use, understandability, simulation support and scope. The study highlights some of the major paradigmatic differences between the techniques. The proposed framework can serve as the basis for evaluating further modelling techniques and generating selection procedures.

Towards a Thorough Evaluation Framework of Software Tools Suitable for Small and Medium Size Enterprises Focusing on Modelling and Simulating Business Processes
Although Business process modelling is an increasingly popular research area for both organisations and enterprises due to its usefulness in optimizing resources management, business reengineering and business performance, it is not yet widely accepted in Small and Medium size Enterprises (SMEs), which are vital for sustainable economy development. The understanding of Business Process is an es...
متن کاملDo Process Modelling Techniques Get Better? A Comparative Ontological Analysis of BPMN
Current initiatives in the field of Business Process Management (BPM) strive for the development of a BPM standard notation by pushing the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN). However, such a proposed standard notation needs to be carefully examined. Ontological analysis is an established theoretical approach to evaluating modelling techniques. This paper reports on the outcomes of an ont...
متن کاملComparative analysis of process and value perspectives for insight in business cooperation
In this paper we exercise a combination of two modelling techniques investigating how they assist in analysis of business processes. For this purpose, we compare e3value and UML Activity models in a case study against a set of business process analysis aspects. The paper concludes that none of the models is alone sufficient for the purpose. However, the e3value model better covers the required ...
متن کاملProcess Modelling and Analysis Using Discrete - Event Simulation 4 BUSINESS PROCESS MODELLING
Globalisation and competitive pressure urge many organisations to radically change business processes. Although this approach can provide significant benefits such as reducing costs or improving efficiency, there are substantial risks associated with it. Using simulation for modelling and analysis of business processes can reduce that risk and increase the chance for success of Business Process...
متن کاملEnriching Knowledge in Business Process Modelling: A Storytelling Approach
The main goal of Business Process Management (BPM) is conceptualising, operationalizing and controlling workflows in organisations based on process models. In this paper we discuss several limitations of the workflow paradigm and suggest that process models can also play an important role in analysing how organisations think about themselves through storytelling. We contrast the workflow paradi...
